BANK ROBBERS

Yesterday, people robbed banks. To name a few.....

                                           Jesse James
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
                                           Ma Barker
                                           John Dillinger
                                           Willie Sutton

Today, banks rob people. To name a few.....

                                           Countrywide
                                           Bank of America
                                           Goldman Sachs
                                           Merrill Lynch

Yesterday's bank robbers went to jail or were killed. Today's bank robbers buy their way out.

Today's bank robbers engaged in sleazy mortgage schemes that broke the economy. They were and are white collar criminals who don't carry a gun. They use money and influence instead. Their actions have resulted in thievery on the highest scale to the detriment of millions of Americans.

Today's bank robbers do not go to jail. Again, they buy their way out. An example being Bank of America's recent civil settlement with the U.S. government to the tune of $16.6 billion. A new form of crime and punishment.

Iceland had a similar problem. The government wanted to bail the banks out. The people said no. Bank leaders were arrested, tried and sent to jail. Iceland survived.

Jail is not in the mix as far as our government is concerned. Attorney General Holder said early on that banks were ".....too big to fail." He later added that the banks were ".....too big to prosecute."

American justice today for a sizable portion of the affluent 1 percent. Those who became extremely wealthy because of wrongdoing. Which means if you are rich enough, crime pays.

THE AL QAEDA GANG THAT COULDN'T SHOOT STRAIGHT

It is acceptable American parlance to describe a screw up by a bunch of people as the gang that couldn't shoot straight. An Al Qaeda group appears deserving of the label.

A new Al Qaeda group was recently formed in the Indian Subcontinent. The Indian Subcontinent is not a part of India per se. The area is located in South Asia and its core lands involve India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Note this story is replete with confusion and inconsistencies. Indian Subcontinent being one of them...

The Al Qaeda group was started by Ayman al-Zawahiri. Not a fool. Knowledgeable in the ways of Al Qaeda. He was close to Osama bin Laden and one of his first followers.

Al-Zawahiri has not been pleased with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and the ISIS organization he heads. Al-Zawahiri started his Al Qaeda group to counter Al-Baghdadi and ISIS.

The Al Qaeda group was in business only ten days when it decided to capture or take down a United States carrier, the USS George Washington. The Washington was in Pakistan's Karachi harbor.

In Karachi harbor also was the Pakistani Navy frigate Zulfiqar. The frigate had been sitting in the same place in the harbor since 2011. Reportedly, the Zulfiqar had no armaments, ordinances and was not seaworthy.

At this point the story becomes confusing. More than one version has been reported.

The first was that ten Al Qaedas went to Karachi harbor with the intent to take over the carrier USS George Washington. They mistakenly boarded the Pakistani frigate Zulfiqar thinking it was the carrier Washington. A battle ensued between the Al Qaeda and Pakistani Naval personnel. Three Al Qaeda died and seven were captured. Two Pakistani were wounded.

How the ten Al Qaeda could have mistaken the frigate for an aircraft carrier is beyond me. The carrier is huge in every respect. The frigate low, sleek and nowhere near as long as a carrier. However, they did. Enter, the gang that couldn't shoot straight..

Other reported news items had the ten Al Qaeda's dressed in Pakistani Naval uniforms. They carried official appearing papers. They approached the Zulfiqar. Several went aboard. A frigate gunner thought something was amiss. Shooting erupted. Four Al Qaedas were killed and six taken prisoner. One of those killed actually took his own life.

The story was these ten Al Qaedas were going to commander the frigate and take it into harbor waters. It was their intent to blow up and destroy the United States carrier the USS George Washington.

Even if the Al Qaeda had been successful in taking control of the frigate, there was no ammunition aboard and the vessel was not even turned on and in a ready to go posture. The engine was cold. Enter again, the gang that couldn't shoot straight.

Whatever the correct version, Ayman al-Zawahiri and his new Al Qaeda organization lost face. They have become the laughing stock of the terror world. One reporter described the attack thusly, ".....a juvenile search for notoriety."

More confusion. The news reports suggested different numbers as to the total  Al Qaeda involved. Four different numbers. All low. The actual number immaterial, except for accuracy purposes.

Even the actual date of the attack has not been agreed upon. Some claim it happened on 9/11 in celebration of that date. Others have it occurring on September 5 or 6.

It was reported that the ten Al Qaeda were not of the same ilk as the masterminds who pulled off 9/11. Otherwise, how could they have confused a frigate for a carrier? Not college graduates and post graduates. Additionally, there does not appear to have been a well  formulated plan for the attack.

I have a couple of reasons for writing about this topic.

First, there have been comments to the effect that a group of ten could not have taken over or badly damaged a carrier. Not enough manpower.

Not true. Think back to the USS Cole in Aden, Yemeni in 1992. Only 2 persons were involved in driving the boat into the Cole. Then there was the World Trade Center underground garage bombing in 1993. A small number involved. The car bombing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1995 involved only 4 persons.

9/11 was the biggest attack of all. Four commercial jets taken over by 19 men who ended up taking down the two tallest buildings in the world and leaving dead just under 3,000 persons.

Not many are required to do significant injury and damage.

The additional reason I selected this topic was the decided lack of media coverage.

The news itself was initially kept from the media. The conflicting accounts and the possible Al Qaeda embarrassment caused some not to talk concerning the event. When the news began to leak out in drips and drabs, several written accounts over several days appeared. Not that many. I do not recall seeing the attack discussed on television. Though I cannot say with certainty that no news show reported the event.

Why the silence? When are the American people going to be made aware regarding what is happening when it happens? Especially a military type attack such as this one. Even for nothing more than the humorous aspect of the attackers mistaking a frigate for a carrier.

MOB RULE

There is a sickness in the land. It is growing. It permeates society's thought process. It is compounded by the media.

America is into mob rule. There is a new political reality. Rule by the masses, rule by the people minus the rule of law. It is rule by a fickle crowd. The crowd being motivated by demagoguery, passion over reason, absolute freedom of expression, and a disregard for Constitutional authorities.

Mob rule finds its place every 50-100 years somewhere in the world. Examples include the crowd shouting for Barabbas over Christ, thumbs up/thumbs down by the spectators in the Coliseum, the Salem witch trails, guillotining during the French Revolution, lynchings in the Old West, lynching of Blacks in the South, and the cry at the time of Castro's revolution for people to be placed against a wall to be shot.

Each of the above incidents involved group thinking which controlled the situation. Not law, not justice.

Mob rule is doing what is politically correct at the moment. Not necessarily what is correct under normal circumstances.

There has been a trend in the United States to dance to the tune of  political correctness. It became more stringent in 2008. Almost compelling. The time coinciding with the start of the recession. Most were losing everything. A few increasing their wealth. The 1 percent / 99 percent situation developed. The people increasingly lost faith in government, their  government protecting them. The rules were not working. The law was not helping them.

A gotcha society developed. The people found a last bastion of power. To cry out whenever a major impropriety reared its ugly head. Political correctness has become big time, superseding the rule of law. The law and its place forgotten. The media has picked up on the trend and magnifies political correctness in its news presentations..

A perfect example is Ray Rice.

He beat his wife. Cold cocked her. Terrible. The worst of scum. He was arrested. The law was dealing with him. Concededly his "punishment" was lenient. Remember however, his wife refused to testify against him.

That should have been the end of it. But no, the Commissioner and Baltimore Ravens hierarchy got into it. Ray was a sexist. Not tolerated in today's society. He had to be further punished. Suspend him! They did out of fear of public retaliation, fewer fans in attendance, etc.

Now comes the film of films. Clearly shows Ray has an inner dislike for women. Otherwise, he could never have hit his wife as he did.

The public shouts out. Punish him further! Punish Commissioner Goodell! Did he know of the video? Had he seen it? If so, when? The media amplifies and adds fuel to the fire. The problem is magnified out of all proportion.

Ray broke the law when he assaulted his wife. The law had dealt with the problem. That should have been the end of it. If the public thought he needed additional punishment, they should have hit Ray and the team in their pocketbooks. Stop attending Baltimore games.

Racism comes into play. Racism and sexism are the two big drawing cards today when it comes to mob rule.

Donald Sterling is the perfect example. A racist from the old school. If he broke a law, he should have been prosecuted. If not, let the public punish him by staying away from Los Angeles Clippers games. But, no again. The crowd called for his punishment. Divest him of his team became the cry. He was. Though amply rewarded with $2 billion.

The same is in the process of happening with Bruce Levenson. He is part owner of the Atlantic Hawks. He recently self confessed to a racist comment made in 2012. He has advised he is therefore selling his interest in the Atlantic Hawks.

I believe the persons mentioned are in a sense victims. As well as whores. Victims of a society that seeks its pound of flesh. A society that has come to believe its government cannot care and protect them. It is a trampled upon American people that needs some satisfaction. They have taken to venting on social evil doers.

Perhaps the mob should go a step further. Why not permanently label social deviates. Recall the woman in The Scarlet Letter. She was required to wear the A for adultery at all times. The mob could insist that the foreheads of racists and sexists be branded with the letters R and S respectively.

Today, racism and sexism. Tomorrow, what? It is a progression.

Legal justice is inadequate. Ferguson one example. Bank CEOs going unpunished another. As long as legal inadequacy continues, mob justice will be substituted.

I am worried about the direction our country is taking. So are most of you. In these times, it is well to keep in mind Biblical admonitions. God knows best.....Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

INCOME INEQUALITY

Income inequality is moving to the front burner as a political issue. Mentioned frequently at this time. Expected to be a primary issue in the 2016 Presidential election.

I am motivated at this time to write because of an article which appeared in the September/October edition of Foreign Affairs. Foreign Affairs is the publication of the policy setting Council on Foreign Relations. The Council is a widely respected non profit think tank.

The article was straight forward and to the point. Its message was to the Federal
Reserve. The Council recommended that the Federal Reserve side step the banks when loaning/processing money out. Banks comprise a significant part of the 1 percent. The money instead should be directly processed to the 99 percent. Again, eliminating banking professionals.

Main Street not Wall Street is in need of funding. To save the economy, money has to get into the hands of the people.

The reason suggested for the change was simple. The banks are not loaning money to the people. Instead, the banks are generally placing the money they receive in interest bearing Federal Reserve accounts. The profits go back to the 1 percent who then park the monies in offshore accounts to avoid taxes.

Life satisfaction has been in steady decline during the past several decades. The United States is increasingly becoming an early Patrician / Plebeian society.

Through the early 1970's, the economy was stable. Most had a place at  the table and were enjoying the fruits of their labor. Since that time, a change has occurred. The rich have gotten richer and the poor poorer. Today, one half of the American population lives in poverty or on low incomes.

Whereas, a select group has emerged earning incomprehensible sums of money. An example is hedge fund manager John Paulson who is reported to have earned $4.9 billion in in 2011. Note billion, not million.

What has caused our country to become a 1 percent / 99 percent society?

I wish to set forth briefly a number of items which have contributed from my perspective to the dilemma.

Most income growth has gone to those at the top. The rarefied air of the CEOs and others at the highest levels of corporate and banking life.

The 1 percent / 99 percent gap which became clearly apparent in 2012 is the widest since the 1920's. In 2012, the incomes of the wealthy 1 percent rose 20 percent as opposed to the 99 percent whose incomes rose only 1 per cent.

Productivity has increased over the last 20 years. Average hourly earnings have not. They have remained essentially flat to down.

Today's dollars equate to 1970 earnings.

Those living in poverty in the United States today number 46.2 million. At a time when corporate profits have reached the highest level in decades. One truth seems to escape attention. The profits in a majority of instances were as a result of reductions in wages and benefits.

From 1992-2007, the top 400 income earners saw their pay increase 392 percent. In addition to which they also experienced a tax rate reduction of 37 percent.

Since the 2008 recession, only the wealthy have received raises. The average American worker has seen no boost in his pay check.

Politics comes into play. Under Democratic Presidents starting with Truman, work men at the bottom of the scale experienced the greatest income gains which tapered off as income rose. Under Republican Presidents, income gains were concentrated at the top, tapering off on the way down the income scale.

The era of income inequality growth coincided with the decline in labor union membership. From 20 percent in 1983 to 12 percent in 2007.

An imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics. The United States is drifting towards a form of oligarchy. The increasing influence of corporations and the wealthy leads to a class system. Unless change occurs, the class system hardens into a permanent one.

Starting in 2000, corporations and businesses have employed thirty times as many Washington lobbyists as trade unions. They also employ sixteen times the lobbyists as labor, consumer and public interest groups combined.

From 1998-2010, business interests and trade groups spent $28.6 billion on lobbying. Labor, only $492 million. Giving business a 60-1 advantage.

Congress is owned by corporate and banking America. Former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is a perfect example. He lost his primary. He resigned Congress. He has been hired by a banking boutique at $3.45 million the first year. While he was Majority Leader, his wife was on the payroll of Goldman Sachs and NY Private Bank & Trust.

The Federal Reserve reported that since the recession, rich families increased their fortunes while poor families experienced cuts in their incomes.

To stimulate an economy, money has to be spent. Since only the rich have money, they are the ones to do the stimulating. They are not. The rich are not spending their money, except on pleasure items such as planes, yachts and trips. An economy without spending stagnates, will not grow, and eventually will creep downward.

If the Republicans were to be believed, one of the evils screwing up the economy is the social welfare net government provides to those that are not in a position to afford, have less or are without. Things like Social Security, Medicare, food stamps, and breakfasts for children.

Not so. Surprise. Today the United States has the weakest social safety net of all developed nations. Some where around 23 in number. Our poverty rate is the highest, Our child poverty rate also the highest (1 in 5). One reason for a high poverty rate is a low level of social expenditures.

The government is forced to pick up where corporate America fails. Walmart is an example. Walmart experienced a $15.7 billion profit last year. Their average pay was $10 an hour. A high percentage of Walmart employees are on public assistance. One Wisconsin store's employees received $900,000 in public assistance.

Banks likewise pay poorly their underlings. A significant number of bank employees receive some sort of public assistance.

While the 99 percent suffer, the Dow and S & P 500 hit their highest levels this year. Dow went over $17,000 and the S & P $2,000.

The average American net worth dropped 43 percent since 2007. Just as the recession was about to hit. Things are supposedly better today. However, the average net worth figure has neither improved nor moved significantly.

Of the full time employed, 40 percent receive some sort of welfare. Welfare includes Medicaid, food stamps, women and children programs, public housing subsidies and temporary assistance to needy families.

The Brookings Institute in a recent study reported that 4.3 percent of American families survive on less than $2 a day. A tiny percentage of the 4.3 percent survive on less. Less being described as negative income and benefits. The study was part of a Social Science Review which raised the question whether the United States was becoming a third world country

Half the workers in the United States earn less than $27,520 per year. Not enough to feed a family, make car payments, pay mortgages and health insurance, provide food and clothing.

Corporate and banker CEO salaries are the highest ever. And yet corporations are opposed to raising the minimum wage to $10.10 over a period of years.

Labor force participation rates are at a 35 year low. There are not enough jobs for everyone. Forty four percent of college grads with bachelor degrees are not working in the area for which they were educated. And whatever the job, they are working at low wages.

Babysitters earn on average twice the minimum wage or more. In Key West, many babysitters are paid $20 an hour.

I could go on. The need for federal programs for highway, bridge and school repair and construction. The Republicans remain adamantly opposed. Somewhere along the line they forgot that a stimulated economy only occurs where both the rich and less than rich are working. Both then spend money which is the only way to get the economy going.

The wealthy's trip to the top of the economic ladder continues to zoom. Like there is no stopping It. In the meantime and as a result of the economy, tens of millions of Americans are dropping out of high school and college. A society requires educated persons to move it ahead.

People in general are unhappy and discouraged by the state of affairs reflected herein. A people will only tolerate being defecated upon for so long. Then they protest. Protests lead to demonstrations. Demonstrations to violence. Then what? I believe one of the reasons for the militarization of the police is to protect the status quo in the event the 99 percent become so unhappy that they won't take it any more.

I do not see things changing. I worry.
